I have wanted to get a laser engraver for a while. So, Sculpfun S9 is my first laser engraver. It is a home run, but with a few cautions and a learning curve. I was overly cautious when putting this together. I wanted to make sure that I didn’t put this together wrong. I wanted to make sure the frame was square. My hesitancy was unfounded. The instructions were pretty clear, and the hardware was clearly marked.

I assembled it in about 20 minutes and installed LightBurn software on my Mac to use the laser. I think they probably should supply some software for this machine however if they did it probably wouldn’t work on Mac anyways. I began with engraving some different fonts and clip art into wood, 50mm/s at 100% power onto a 1/8 piece of plywood I had laying around. After that I moved to a steel AR magazine I had laying in my shop, 10mm/s at 100% power made a nice engraving of the Gadsden flag on it. I did some engraving on some old credit cards at 50mm/s also as a test. It will cut half inch plywood with 6 passes at 10mm/s 100% power and make very nice clean cuts. I have also engraved aluminum at the same settings as steel. My next project will be glass but I haven’t had time to do that job yet. To those who have complained it doesn’t work on metal it is definitely your settings because it works fine on it. I think I seen someone complaining that it wouldn’t cut half inch wood and they were running at 3000mm/m and you’re right it won’t at that speed. My VW won’t win any street races either but it will get me to work and back reliably.
